Farmer Champion Week 2024: September 6-13

Farmer Champion Week is back for its 4th year! Georgia's local Mushrooms will be the star of this show. For one week only, you can visit any of our participating Farmer Champion businesses to try incredible seasonal dishes highlighting mushrooms.

Georgia Organics’ Farmer Champion campaign highlights and celebrates members of the food service community who source from Georgia producers and re-invest in our local food economy, day in and day out.

During the annual Farmer Champion Week, participating Farmer Champion restaurants, bakeries, butcheries, and more, highlight featured local ingredients on a unique Farmer Champion Week dish.

MUSHROOM FACTS

You can find mushrooms that are commonly cultivated, out in the wild – including Lion’s Mane and Oysters. Other highly coveted/popular varieties across Georgia include Morels in the spring, Chanterelles in late summer, Porcini in the fall, and Chicken of the Woods from late spring through fall.

Certain mushrooms including Oysters, Lion’s Mane, Morels, and Chicken of the Woods are Saprotrophic meaning they feed on dead trees. Others like Chanterelles and Porcini mushrooms are Mycorrhizal meaning they live in symbiosis with the roots of a living tree.

Lion’s Mane

Did you know that Lion’s Mane Mushrooms (Hericium Erinaceus) have been studied for their potential neuroprotective effects? Research suggests they may promote nerve growth factor (NGF) production in the brain, which could potentially support cognitive function and help with nerve regeneration.
